A person can seek consultation without being able to precisely identify what is happening to them. Suffering can manifest as anxiety, fatigue, sadness, relational difficulties or repetitions whose meaning they do not understand.
Anxiety, fatigue, sadness, irritability, relational difficulties or the feeling that life is happening to you can be the visible manifestations of a suffering whose origin is not immediately clear.
Consultation can allow space for what is being experienced and explore the circumstances, repetitions and associations that accompany it.
It is possible to primarily seek to reduce a symptom. It is also possible to want to understand why it appeared and what place it occupies in one's personal history.
Psychoanalysis falls within this second approach.
Symptoms, repetitions and current difficulties can serve as starting points to explore what is at play in psychic life, without assuming that a single cause can necessarily be found.
Psychoanalysis can be considered when a person wishes to understand more deeply their relationship to themselves, to others, to their emotions or to certain repetitions.
It can also find its place in a period of transition, questioning or upheaval.
The first consultation allows you to speak about your request and to see if the psychoanalytic framework corresponds to what you are looking for.
There can be a tendency to compare one's suffering to that of others and to tell oneself that one's problem is "not serious enough."
This comparison is not necessarily relevant.
If a difficulty takes up significant space in your life, prevents you from moving forward or causes you lasting suffering, it deserves to be heard.
It happens that a person consults several professionals without feeling they have found a framework in which they can genuinely work. Methods, ways of speaking, session rhythm or the relationship with the therapist may not suit everyone's expectations or needs.
This experience does not necessarily mean that the person is "impossible to help." It can invite clarifying what is sought in therapy, what was missing in previous experiences and what would allow feeling sufficiently at ease to speak.
A first meeting can serve precisely to clarify the request, the proposed framework and how the work can be envisioned.
Sessions are based on speech and a regular framework that allows speaking about what brings someone to consult.
There is no need to arrive with a perfectly defined problem. Current events, memories, relationships, thoughts and emotions can progressively reveal certain connections.
As a psychoanalyst in Lyon, I offer consultations in my practice and via teleconsultation for people who wish to engage in a talking process around what brings them in.
A first meeting allows us to get acquainted, clarify your request and see if a psychoanalytic approach corresponds to your situation and expectations.
